Today we slept in and ate breakfast downstairs at the Maccabim Guest House. We all piled onto Marwaan's bus, and he drove us to a nice spot in the woods near Tel Aviv, where we had a picnic for Yom Ha'aztmaut. Some of the students prepared the vegetables for the salads, while Mr. Schryvers and Marwaan set up the grill. Marwaan was very skilled at grilling food properly, so he cooked sausages and chicken skewers for us. Michal had us play two games involving the delicious peanut-flavoured snack Bamba. In one, we were split into groups of two, and one group member stuffs as many pieces of bamba in the other person's mouth as they can. The other game involved blowing a piece of Bamba from one side of a blanket to the other. Then we played a game called "Package," where we passed a package made of pages from a newspaper around in a circle. Music played while we passed the package around, and when the music stopped, the person holding the package at the time had to rip of one layer. Each layer had a note on it, with a specific challenge or question that the person had to complete or answer. A gift was hidden in the centre of the package, which Daniel ended up winning, a tin of sardines in a tomato sauce. After our lunch, we gave our leftovers to an appreciative family also celebrating Yom Ha'Atzmaut in the woods, and got on the bus. We drove to Tel Aviv, where we met up with Shira and her family. At the beach, the sand was hot and the water was cold, but we had a good time. We played volleyball at the nets and threw seaweed at each other and attempted to body surf in the Mediterranean. Afterwards, we ambled, due to the copious amounts of sand underneath our clothes, to a nearby strip mall, where we shopped for last-minute gifts for our friends and families, and ate dinner. Afterwards, we drove back to the hotel.
